Does anyone know what the relative compounds are like of the Dunlop R7 165/70 10's and the Dunlop SP Sports?

I've worn out a pair of the SP Sports in an indecently low mileage!

What do other people run in this size? I'd like something reasonably grippy, preferably classic looking and preferably will hold up to few thousand miles.

We did a set of R7's in 2,500 miles. It was on an MCR Monte event so it was a proper car full of tools/spares/clothing & two bodies all the time. Didn't think that was bad considering the abuse the car got on the Col's. Some cars don't even do 2,500 miles in two years let alone a week

Guess it's the same trade of grip V wear rate......

Dunlop D93J on the same kind of trip were still legal after the event, the R7's were ready for the bin.

Yup that's it, they don't make many sticky tyres that last too long. If you're not doing lots of miles or lots of competition then R7's will last you plenty. In fact judging by the miles most people do in old Minis nowadays wear rate isn't that important (me included) but after my recent all day stint at Aintree and a few hillclimbs last year my R7's are almost finished.

Got it the wrong way around, it is the R7's I'm running.

I've managed to drop a set to about 3.5mm in just shy of 2000 miles, but with a few spirited laps of Combe and a couple of demo runs on an autotest thrown in.
I'm not overly worried about wear rate, but 2k miles is very low.

I've just ordered another pair of R7's so we'll try again!!

The R7 wear rate will be much greater than the SP's I have never found the SP to be a tyre that wears particularly badly.

(jesus pete - my avons were gone after 2 sessions at Aintree, makes R7s look really long lasting)

We did front O32r's in an hour on a grippy airfield at a Club Mini France event

Sp Supers were fine when I last used them but the edges suffer with track use.

ive found the avons to be the longest lasting tyre for comp use, due to the stiff sidewall stopping the carcass moving so much and allowing the tread to get so hot.

if yokos etc are only lasting a short time, its might be worth getting them shaved, as this really helps with the life of a tyre as the reduction in the size of the tread blocks helps with the heat of the tyre as the blocks cannot shuffle around and warm up

Just another thing to add. We all tend to run around in our Euro boxes with 16" + alloy wheels, just think how many times your poor 10" wheels have gone round in 2-2,500 miles

The way is see it there's three main choices. R7's for a period look, Avon's if your bank balance allows or Yoko A032 if you want some grip at a good price & don't care what they look like.

Anyone got any other options??

Spoke to Vintage Tyres at Bulee who said they won't be getting any more R7's for a while, well until Dunlop JP made some. They also said they were very grateful to me for getting them to bring 'em over in the first place. ( I made that last bit up )

...I run yoko ao32 r types on d1,s for my car,..fab grip for fast road use but becoming increasingly difficult to find a dealer..being phased out I suspect ,not a classic look but very much sorted to a sporty mini.....when I replace I would go for same or Dunlop d93,s....foxy52

good job you can rely on some of the larger mini specialists, who have a good stock of them then....

we also have loads of yoko 32r's as well.....
