Without stripping the head off a 997 Cooper how do you distinguish between the 997 and 998 engine. A mate of mine has a block that has '1000' as raised letters where the ali tag normally lives. Oddly it also has a blanking plate for a mechanical fuel pump. I know little about 997/998 Coopers and wondered if anybody on here could help him out. Cheers. Mark

Thanks. Any suggestions as to why you think that?

Oh yes, remove the rocker cover and the head casting number will either be 12A185 or 12G202 if it's a 997, 12G206 or 12G295 if it's a 998 (Cooper).
