67 morris cooper s (problems)

hi everyone well today im going to get out the 67 morris s now the problem with it is the running of the engine and i was wondering if anyone could help me diagnose?

Il try explain the problem best i can but i will take a video later and link it seems that would be much easier.

well problem is the choke needs to be all the way out for it to start and when it does it just revs really high however as soon as you touch the choke even a small nudge it dies like i said il post a video later but any ideas please let me know.

Ive already ben told to try ajusting the carbs it did nothing also there might be drawing air from somewhere? but im not sure where to check any help would be appreciated

Okay, i'm not as experienced as many of the members here but i will try!...

Sounds to me as though it is running lean if it will only start with the choke fully out? What carbs do you have? Also, have you checked the spark plugs to see what colour they are?

If they are Twin SU's, have you tried adjusting the mixture screws? Also check there is oil in the dashpots by undoing the plastic knob (or brass if your lucky!!) on top as you look at them, and pull out the piston to check - there should be roughly up to about an inch under the top. The oil stops the piston going up too quickly, if there's no oil it may have gotten stuck.

When you say "today i'm going to get out the 67 morris s" - makes me think how long has it been sat for since last usage? Was it running okay the last time you used it?

You can check for air leaks using carb cleaner, spray around them and listen for a change in engine note.

You have to be careful however, as the vapours can be ignited by the hot exhaust manifold.

If you still have the brake servo, make sure there is no air being drawn through that or the connections & pipe leading to it.

was doing it before we put it into the shed for storage we had to focus on the 970s to get it ready the carbs were fully rebuilt before getting put on new spark plugs etc etc ive taken a video today will upload it either tonight or tomorrow might help things

Hi, once its running spray brake cleaner or wd40 around the carbs and inlet. Any change in engine tone would suggest an air leak to me. Good luck. Mark

This might helps, don't laugh... my lawnmower has exactly the same problem. First happened last year first time out, traced this to water in the carb. Same again last weekend, also water in the carb.

I think most UK petrol now contains about 5% ethanol. This absorbs water from the air, not a probem with a daily driver but if the petrol sits for several months can absorb enough that it then splits out and sits in the bottom of the tank or carb.

I'll go with the air leak theory....

It is not unreasonable that you should need full choke - even in summer in Oz I need full choke to kick things off (in the morning)...

However, unless you have your foot on the pedal there's not much air so you shouldn't get the big rev - unless there's a leak...

I suggest you start by setting up the carbs again. Check which needles have been fitted as I think the carbs were intended for the 970. Make sure the dashpot pistons are moving freely and oil added to correct level. Set up the mixture and adjust linkages correctly. Hopefully checking these will resolve the problem. Might be worth checking the timing too. Good luck. Kev
