Alternator problem?

Sorry - non Mini but this is a crisis of Baldrick proportions......
.....potential buyer coming to look at the Clio Cup 172 (standard road car) at the weekend but now, all-of-a-sudden, the bloody STOP and Battery warning lights have started to come on intermittantly (that is, one minute I can start up and go for a drive with no problem and the next minute I can start up, the lights come on and no amount of driving or revvving will change the situation). I suspect a loose wire somewhere but I don't know where to look! I cannot believe the alternator is buggered as sometimes the lights are are on and other times it's Happy Days.
NB. I can put a voltmeter across the battery terminals when no warning lights and it'll read 14.75v, so it must be charging, mustn't it. Confess, I haven't tried it when the're on yet
