Time to do a bit more to mine and I thought I’d start with the tank (looks like it could be easy). Surface rust inside and out. Any suggestions on the best way of tackling it? I’m tempted to get it blasted and powder coated but guess I should deal with the rust inside first.

If I was you I'd get it blasted & P/C'd externally first then treat with one of Frosts Petrol tank restoration kits. Alternatively you can remove the rust with Machine Mart Brick Cleaner (Hydrocloric Acid) rinse & dry THOROUGHLY & use POR15 Petrol tank sealer to seal it. Make sure you avoid the petrol tank gauze when using the sealer though, it will clog it up a treat! Also make sure the product is THOROUGHLY dry before you re fill the tank.

if your going to use any sort of sealer try and flick the little filter off before (its a swine of a job, but even worse to do afterwards!)

also run a in line filter as the tank liner stuff does seam to 'leak' a fine white sand out of the liquid for months afterwards - i have to keep swopping the filter on my pump and its only ever blocked with this stuff

Solid advice, thanks. I doubt it will see any petrol any time soon, so loads of time to cure.

or treated as sacrificail - you need to bung the hole up so you can rotate the tank to coat the insides - i think i used an old sended in mine with the float arm cut off - that, or just bunged it up with duct tape

I made a little blank that screwed into position as I was doing an early bolt in sender tank.

I used a POR15 tank kit to do a RH tank.

I was able to use their motorcycle tank kit that is suggested for up to 6.5 gallon...so plenty to do a 5.5 gal tank.
It included the rust remover, cleaner and sealer.
The tank had a leak before hand....not a drop in 3 years now.
