same thing happered to me, NOS smiths rev counter off ebay, spent hours on it, finally had to admit it dont work correctly, i get a reading but it seems double it should be at the top end, if i try to calibrate it with the little screw in the back to bring it down, i get no reading....i wounder if anyone out there maintains these things......again mine was not cheap......

These details appear to have a slightly different wiring arrangement than the ones on Mark's site. Perhaps this might work?

Hi,
I had one repaired a long time ago (over 20 years) by a company that repaired tachographs in Nottingham. Don't even know if they still exist. To be honest there isn't a lot inside them, and someone with a little basic knowledge of electronics could probably sort it out. The calibration is probably the hardest bit. The one I had repaired is sitting on my bench in the garage, but no idea if it still works. If I remember right it was converted to neg earth when I got it fixed.

I found this website last year, when i changed the engine in my mk1 i decided to opt for negative earth. He converted my older style face Smiths RVI tach, probably replacing with RVC internals, so that it would work with electronic ignition and negative earth.

One comment i can make, at the time he was very hard to get hold of! However, it was quick and the item did look brand spanking new once returned.

His name is Alan Davis, and he is based in Edenbridge, Kent. (If that is of any use to you, or nearby!) ;)

i had a speedwell/smith tach in my race car in 1971 thru 1973. my engines seemed to last all season with just a touch up on the exhaust valves. i thought my engines DON'T BREAK!,then i installed a smith chronometric tach and realized the electric tach was reading 1200 rpms low. i still have both tachs and we still race the same mini. jw
