He reckons its a "Downton" unit because of the stamped marks in it. . . . These are the factory stamps & nothing to do with Downton at all.

Isn't it a 1275 'S' however, telling by the tappet chest covers? Aren't they rare units nowadays?

the one's without are 1275\1300 gt, theirs still a few around i bought a couple this year

Yup, it is a 1275 S unit, and it looks OK. It's just the Downton connection that's total cobblers.

the blocks has had liners installed and you can see where one is damaged at the top ,someone drilled and tapped the block to modify the oil system,it's got hammer marks on parts you don't hammer on....i see lots of problems

I have seen much worse resurrected though.

thats just been done to run a remote oil filter, my 8 port has been modified exactly the same way

looks like its had piston ring "pumping" at soome time too
its got 2 wear ridges in the bore

i'm not saying you can 't fix this stuff but for the money spent you could do better. it's not made of gold

Well no but S blocks generally aren't that easy to find in decent condition let alone cranks. That may well change when the rumoured recast S blocks come out.

Some top notch shill bidding going on with that one though.

thats true Pete but if we are talking about the same chap that has just recast the heads they are £2700 each. blocks are going some money i thinks

£ 850 wouldn't that was way over the top ! i thought it was about 500 - 600 quids worth, crank 300 block 200 and rods 100 but if you need them ?

I think the Swifty race heads from the new castings are that much but not a bare casting surely. I saw the castings at Race Retro and they do look impressive, the ports on the race head were huuuuge with the outer two exhaust ports being a great big D shape. That sort of money is so far beyond most club racers though. I wouldn't have thought the bare blocks will be that much more than a grand would you think because 2nd hand blocks are only half that when you can get them plus you don't need them for App K.

would be nice if they were around a grand ! as by the time you bought a rusty block had it dipped linered cam bearing etc your at that any way. swifty must have some money wrapped up in those heads ! drawings moulds machining testing etc

There is a lot more work in a block than in a head.
