It looks very much like the repro one I've just got, but not as 'blingy' (mines due for some genuine ageing before it goes on the car :P ) so either the copy I have is very good (which I'm pleased about), or its real, I think we need to wait for Mark to come along for the answer :ugeek:

Please let me know why it should be a fake.
If yes, I will change my mind about the one, who sold it to me.

Looks perfectly OK to me.

I'd stuck a speculative snipe on it, but I guess I have been trumped.

My comment was not ment to be critical of the badge, just that I'm pleased the repro one I have is very close to the one you advertised, I always try to make anything that I fit to the car fit in with its overall look, I even de-blinged one of Tom Kidds new steering brackets to take the shine off it, I'd always ask for an opinion if I was going to spend lots on a rare part, which is all the OP did :)

This is what a 50 year old Downton badge should look like, not the pristine (original  ) out of the bubble wrap one thats just been sold on ebay.

Its called patina, only comes with age, and Ive got a fair old bit of it. ;)

My opinion only of course.

The badge is mine.
I bought it here on this board as original.
I did list it on ebay, because I need some money as my Mini needs a new front.
But now I have decided to keep it.

And why should a badge with patina be more orginal than a very good one?

Unless I'm very much mistaken its one of the Nos ones I bought from ray Shepard.

A badge will only have patina if its ever been fitted and even them patina can be created.

Well if you are right UHR850, Ray Shepard, and by implication myself have been selling duff badges.

I suspect that you could be seeing Ghosties where they don't exist.

You may have a point UHR 850, its definitely in a different place to mine if you compare the two badges together. I suppose tooling for the badges could have changed over the years??

Not wanting to piss on anyone's bonfire or anything, but I am not at all convinced by the badge owned by AppK at all. Personally, I would not buy that one as I have never seen a known original that looks anything like it. It certainly has a number of anomalies when compared to any "normal" Downton badge.

Once again getting back to the badge that started all this, I bought it along with 5 others from Ray Sheppard the forman of the Downton experimental shop who worked for the Richmond's between 1957 & 1976. I got to know Ray quite well after the first Downton Reunion that I helped organise in 2006. There is absolutely NO POINT whatsoever trying to suggest that this is not right, because it is.

Having said all the above, the Downton badge underwent a few recognised variations over the years & I don't by any means claim to be the gospel authority on these or for that matter anything else.

Bonfire not pissed on?
I suppose it makes a rare badge even rarer?

The point I was trying to make if you would have looked at my comment was not to discredit this badge after your connection with Ray Shepard. (so im a bit confused as to why you have just done that with mine..its not even for sale?) I simply said, as you have just commented Mark, that maybe these badges have gone through changes over the years.

All I was trying to do was illustrate that there are probably variations to all these badges & no one can possibly know everything.

I got just an offer for it, as I closed the ebay auction.
I was offered 25 pounds, but only, if it is original :?:

Correct.

The badge on my 64 Downton car is identical to the ones on your own link to Downton?

Just confused at your comments on the anomalies that you suggested? Could do with clearing the air on this one.
