I don't know about the newton one, but if you are interested, I have an absolutely MINT original in the loft.

In my experience, the original colour for Mk1's was grey. The Newton crackle is quite cream and unlike the colour of any Mk1 headlining I've ever seen.

Hi Robert,
That may well be the case now, the stuff I've seen was viewed some time ago. I take it back then, sorry.

The cream crackle offered by Newton is a PERFECT Match for the original cream crackle supplied by BMC. Or at least it was last time I got some.

Hi Mark,
My S has grey, as does the '65 and '64 I have so was it dependant on model, trim colour etc?

Al, were yours UK built cars?

Because as far as I was aware All post 63 UK built cars had the cream crackle lining.

As usual I am prepared to be proven wrong.

I have to say that the cream crackle from Newton is pretty much bang-on the colour of the original in my '63 when you take into a account 50 years of fading on the original.

Personally very happy with the new stuff.

Many years ago when I bought a headlining kit from Newtons I was somewhat disappointed to find it was grey. When I mentioned this, the response was "Oh no - we've sent you a Minor kit... we'll put a Mini one in the mail straight away..."

I was very impressed with this response. When I asked if they wanted the old (obviously brand new) one back I was told that - no postage would be a waste - find someone with Minor and give it to them...

Cheers, Ian

Does anyone have any other contact from newton (email) besides 'sales@...'?

My boot board does not fit between the tanks and I've been trying to contact them but have not received any reply.

By the way, can someone measure one boot board for twin tanks for comparison? I've measured an original one that had 66.50cm wide and it fits well. Mine from Newton measures 67.50 and definitely will not go in. Both tanks are pushed against the shell panels as far as they go.

Hi Mark,
My 66S is UK assembled but the '64 and '65 are NZ assembled. The colour and and construction of the linings and frames are identical so I am thinking they were probably imported as part of the CKD kits. The other thing is, just what do we call cream or grey ? I mixed some vinyl paint to recolour the lining for the '64 and there is white, black and yellow in it so one could call it cream I suppose but it looks grey to me.

Grey from my Traveller. Under bright lighting it looks almost white.

This was dirty and stained but I scrubbed it with a bit of workshop hand cleaner and it came up like new. The same material was used in a lot of BMC cars of the period and is still available from main-stream upholstery suppliers.

Which cars used "crackle" pattern and which cars used the type in the photo by Tim above?

I'm interested in a UK response, I'm in NZ, and there was at least some local trim content in our cars.

MY NZ assembled car differ, the 63 Austin 850 has cream crackle headlining, visors, and rear parcel, with grey card c-post liners
My 67 Morris 850 has the stuff in Tim's photo on headliner, c-posts,dash cards and dash liner, the rear parcel is porcelain green like the seats, and the visors are crackle.

Just had a look in the loft, and i have crackle in both grey and cream, also the other type above in cream and also grey, and another one which I would describe as "surface of the moon" in cream!

I would call the large square picture in Tims post the Grey that is only used in early Non Cooper Minis.

The "Cream Crackle" is definitely more cream in colour & has a pattern that looks like tiny spiders webs. It is this lining that is used on all (to the best of my knowledge) Coopers & S's.
