Battery box detail.

Post by Mark T Boldry »

Before I start fitting a battery box recently bought from a well respected Australian MG / Mini parts supplier, does anyone have any detail pictures of the bottom of the box, and the clamp brackets....?
The box I have has NO drain holes and is flat.... I seem to remember they have a trough on them.... Am I right?

Cheers,
Mark.

I'm not certain that all battery boxes look like this, but its what I'm used to seeing. Also from a well respected Australian Mini parts supplier.

That's what I thought mins should look like.... Maybe I should send mine back. It would have been fine had I not found out that the Mini is the 11th oldest surviving Mini in Aus.... Now I think the detail is far more important.

Hows it going Mark? Early cars don't have the centre hole, just the two outer ones, if you want the detail spot on!

I'd send it back and get a proper one. There's an old habit in Australia of selling any old piece of junk as a replacement panel. 850s are becoming big over here now so they are worth doing right.

Any pictures of it?

I'm inclined to either send it back and get a more accurate one, or modify this one.... what I need to know is what it should look like.

All my pics are too big, I'll have to learn how to made the file size smaller.....

I really need some detail pictures of what the base of the early battery box should look like, with some dimensions too if possible....

Cheers,
Mark

Here's a few pics taken of a battery box on my March 61 Mini Minor.
I was expecting to find a replacement box in there, but it looks like the original. :o
If it has been changed somebody has done a super job because it has been spot welded in and the top corners have been gas welded as per originals.
I forgot to take measurements, but will venture out again after supper.

The dimensions are, (roughly) 170mm x 255mm at the base of the box.
This tapers out to roughly 275mm long at the top of the box and 180mm wide at the lower edge next to the tyre well.
The highest point (adjacent to the wheel arch) is 185 / 190mm deep.
The centre of the bracket is about 50mm in from the edge of the box and is a single hole bracket.
Hope it makes some sense. ;)

Absolutly fantastic... many thanks....!
Mine was spot welded in and brazed on each corner.
