dvla screw up on mk1 cooper v5c document

Post by 814CWE »

the log book on my 64 cooper is all to-cock

firstly i recieved a v5c-
not for a mini...no no no.. one for a 2008 bmw 3 series.

that got sent straight back-asking why???
then the document arrived for the cooper...

the engine number is correct in the digits, but the morons who originally registered the car in 1964 have wrote 8AM-
wrong..its a 9FA sa h --they must have assumed it was a mini 850 though it says 998 cc and its showing cooper on log book

the chassis number is all over the place with a missing letter at the beginning..and 2 extra numbers that shudnt be there...

nothing tallies up properly.

its a one owner car,the old guy had it from new.i dont think he knew any better..

dvla are an utter pain when it comes to getting stuff swapped-whats the best route to go down.??

i assume the details were entered wrongly at the cars registration in may 64,,not a recent error
for my sins,i own a 1957 wolsleley 1500

Wrong numbers are quite common, the original green/beige log books were handwritten often with mistakes, then these errors were later transposed to the DVLA computer V5 with the errors or more added......for instance on some of my V5's the number 5 and letter S are confused/misread from earlier hand written entries. Proved more hassle than its worth to correct but I believe it can sometimes cause problems if the MOT inspector enters the correct number off the chassis plate into the online MOT computer which has the incorrectly transposed DVLA number!

thats my point-
the chassis number on the tag differs from the log book,,,its obvious its right to us "mini fanatics" but to vosa,,,the car entered for the mot aint the one on the computer,,

godamn stupid,,and a total pain to rectify.

Have you tried a visit to your local DVLA office? Perhaps armed with evidence such as John Parnells book giving correct details of numbers/letters used? Sometimes, face to face, members of staff can be very helpful. Otherwise, a relevant car club approved by the DVLA should be able to help.

My 66 coopers green log book was messed up by whoever originally wrote it. My document had another blue/white coopers engine and chassis numbers on it, and visa versa. I noticed after 38 years (with a bit of help from the Mk1 Cooper Registrar) we realised what had happened.

To be fair to the DVLA they sent people out to inspect both cars and it was eventually sorted, but I feel for you with the constant cockups.

In 2004 we found a nice Riley Elf over there that we wanted to buy, but to ship it to the USA means all the numbers on the car had to match the DVLA paperwork and a letter S and number 5 had been transposed. The seller sent off the log book with a letter saying the car was being sold for export and the numbers had to match, sent along a photo showing the numbers on the car, they corrected the error, we bought the car.
Everything went smoothly. I don't know, maybe the idea that they could get rid of another old car and its silly paperwork helped it through the DVLA process.

I'd not bothered to correct the missing prefixes or incorrect S to 5's on the logbooks, that was until the MOT's went computerised, then I sorted them out before they were tested as I'd started to hear all sorts of stories about number plates being suspended / vehicle inspections ect, with photos and Heritage Certificates the DVLA changed everything straight away and sent back the new documents, as said above try your local office (before it gets shut down!)
