Hi. I'm getting my 61 'ratty' project on the road soon and want to protect the underside from the usual salt and wet etc. It looks like it has never been undersealed or anything and so the floor is just covered in flakey surface rust. I currently use Neutrarust on my cars and seems to do do well with parts I have painted before and rust has not come back through. Im intending to remove as much flakey rust as possible, give it 2 coats of Neutrarust then get some colour matched paint and give it a coat or two then give it a covering of wax oil. Just wondering what people think of that and if thats the best thing i can do to protect the floors. Was also thinking of using Neutrarust then using an underseal that goes hard and locks out moisture (cant remember the name now). But found of with my other mini which has tetraseal that rust formed under the coating and so now I dont like not being able to see what is going on

You can see what my floor currently looks like: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=6384

Thanks

That sounds like a good plan, and yes - some of the thick Black hard stuff tend to harden too much.

we have some thick Gold coloured underseal, that dont harden up, its really good.

I think its called Dinitrol ? good stuff.

A must (if you will use it in rain.etc = viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5811

I use black waxoyl, mixed with a small amount of old engine oil on the outside of the floor pans & smooth Hammerite on the inside, I repeat the outside treatment every 2 years & treat any surface rust with POR Metal Ready.
My floor pans are original & 31 years old, the only places I found any serious rust was due to mud collecting in the gaps between the slipper plates (often wrongly thought to be jacking points) & floor, at each corner of the floor pan. I now fill the gap with the thickest grease I can find & have had no more rust issues in those locations. Also make sure the area around the rear subframe mountings is kept free of mud build up & sprayed with waxoyl or similar on a regular basis, it greatly enhances the life expectancy of your Mini.
As said by JC T, Dinitrol is very good & they provide a good range of anti corrosion products, much of this is a matter of choice, the main thing is, once your floor is protected, keep it clean, salt water will run off clean panels but will soak into mud & remain there for months.
