Early Metal Master Cylinder Caps - Remanufactured

A USA based MGA specialist has had the early Lockheed metal brake/clutch master cylinder caps re-manufactured (by a British company) which were also fitted to early Mini's before the later white plastic cap was introduced. They include the internal fibre washer, cotter pin and vent hole in the top. Price $7.95 each plus $6 min handling fee according to December Miniworld mag. Original items have been selling at some very 'premium' prices on ebay recently! :o

Is it me or is the cotterpin on the Ebay ones different to the original one??

They aren't perfectly identical to the originals, but they are so close you'd need to be an anorak carrying a magnifying glass to tell the difference, and they are way better than a crumbling rusty one, or paying 50 to 100 pounds for a good original one.

There seem to be more & more of these about. No doubt people will still feel the urge to prove their obsession credentials by spending £100 plus on an original to prove they are "more Mini" than other people.

More fool them, is what I say.

i use the plastic ones anyway-they dont leak like the metal ones............ :lol:

Which doesn't make sense as the S came along so much later. Anyone got a definative on the change point ?

The Powertrack guy was saying that old stock was occasionally used up after the change point so some later cars may have left the factory with the caps. This might lead to confusion on the change date.

the tooling for making these metal caps was dismantled and removed from lockheed factory in late march 1962

obviously the cyls were still in circulation for quite a few months afterwards

the ex lockheed employee who then moved onto working for ferodo- quotes the metal caps and the fixed locknut type of master cylinder becoming "defunct" at the same time.as there was a major tooling re-jig in march 62-on all lockheed cylinders.

by may 62 all cylinders supplied to bmc had a plastic cap and no fake locknut on the cylinder top.
as bmc bought these by 8000 at a time it was a small while before the new types started to filter on the production line i suppose.
