Could be either..or both I suppose

You can do car checks on the internet using just the registration number or ask in a friendly motor factors - that should tell you what car, if any, the registration number is now on, IF it was transfered.

I think, (could be wrong) that the car you're transferring a cherished plate from has to be Mot'd at the time of transfer so an old car with its original number that's been off the road for sometime can't just "donate" it's reg.

My car's original number I've learned is now on a BMW convertible and I've got an age related "A" suffix plate in it's place, spoils originality somewhat.

I sold a Morris Minor some years ago which had a fantastic plate that I'd happily have transferred to my everyday car but didn't want to rob the moggie of it's identity, similarly, my dad's got a 1955 Ferguson TEA20 "grey fergie" tractor with a great plate but you wouldn't want to change that for a modern one either!

This is a pet hate!!!

yes you are correct on the reg transfer rules
how did you find out where your old number ewent
as for me i would have thought that the number on my old mini would have been transferred anyway given to days reg no values
andy
or perhaps the car languishes somewhere waiting for me to wave the magic wand and uncover it

Entered it in Autotrader registration search, gives year, make and model of car reg assigned to.

Yes, the donor car has to be MOT'd to transfer the plate. But it's not too difficult to ring an old car to get a registration number transferable ! That's my theory on why these number plates firms advertise for any car with a pre suffix number with OR without MOT. Just nail the ID on an MOTable sibling car and hey presto, a saleable number !!

It's not possible ( unless it's recently changed) to transfer a number from an agricultural vehicle to a different road going taxation classed vehicle. Tried that years ago on my Dad's 1950 grey Fergie. That was before I gave much thought to the number being part of its history. Another project for the future.

Andy, another possibility is that the number WAS transfered but is currently on a retention certificate.
If that is the case, it won't show up on vehicle checks. I'm not aware of ANY checks that will tell you if this is the case?

Have you looked for your registration on dealer's websites?
