Steering rack testing

What do I need to look for? I'm stripping down my '62 car and want to know how to check the condition of the steering rack. I know to check for the condition of the gaiters and play in track rod ends. But how do you, or Mr MOT man, check the condition of the rack and bushes etc? Anything else?

Any suggestions much appreciated

Check for play on the drivers side. Jack the car up and try pulling the road wheel in and out while feeling for any loose or free play. Do the same on the passangers side, however look also for movement of the inner rack up and down as well. Next, have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth a little in the straight ahead position while looking for any rotation of the inner rack, repeat the same near the left and right lock position. ANY movement indicates that parts are worn. I don't think parts are available for an overhaul of UK manufactured racks.
