Hello from a Newbie

Post by Jono »

Hi all,

My first post on this great looking forum.

I am a returning Mini enthusiast after more years than I dare mention! I used to have Mk1 and 11 Coopers and S's many years ago and they were always my first love.

I am the new owner of a car which was advertised on here:

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5651

I noticed my Mini on here purely by chance after happening upon the site - the car was actually purchased via Pistonheads. Anyway I have great plans for the car and look forward to posting progress on here in the coming months. I want to recreate an evocation of the BMC works minis but it will not be a show field car, I intend to use albeit probably not for competition just blatting for fun around the northern fells.

My other fun car is a Lotus Elan +2S which is coming to the end of a very long 5 year nut and bolt restoration. That car will be my 'cruiser' and the Mini for thrashing :D (in a nice way of course). Previous cars have included a Caterham and a Eunos and I drive a Legacy day to day.

I'm based in Cumbria by the way - that wet bit in the top left hand corner of England :(

That's a very nice looking car. I would think it's good that it is staying in GB, just too bad it isn't coming over this way.
I was just wondering, is that a wet or dry suspension?

Oh, and welcome to the mk1 forum :D

Hi Frogeye, and thank you for the welcome :P

The car is on dry suspension. The PO has carried out a lot of work on the suspension in fact - hi lo's, Minitastic springs, Spax adjustables and adjustable camber arms - even the radius arms appear to have adjustment for camber/toe in.

I have had very little chance to do much with the car since I obtained it due to work pressure so do not know it very well yet. I did fit Powerspark ignition and a new coil as there was an ignition problem on my first outing. That seems to have sorted it and the car runs well now but is begging for more power, being on a bog standard 1275 A+ engine

The suspension set up definately needs sorting but offers a good platform to develop the car - it is on race spec springs which I think are too hard fro my taste. Fast road springs would be more suitable I think so I may change them in due course.

...It has a Rokee dash which is not to my taste. I am looking for a traditional centre binnacle if anyone has one, and also a Smiths impulse tacho.
