I've got a Mk3 Cooper S, I've been told the valve guides need doing because of smoke on start up, is it better to bid on this head or should I just get my own one sorted? I must admit I get nervous bidding on private listings as you can't see who's bidding etc?

That's only because the seats have been reground by a monkey. Could still be good, but you'll never know until you see it in the flesh.251 ENG wrote:That heads had a hard life , look at the width of the valve seats

Those seats are terrible, possibly indicative of the rest of the head, I would'nt buy it.

Re: 11 STUD MOWOG 12G940 HEAD
I'd never bother buying a head like the ebay one, as has already been pointed out the valve seats are massive & the valves are sunk into the head. It could indeed be improved from what it is like now, but it's always going to be poor.
Getting a set of vavle guides fitted & seats re cut is not an expensive job. Get your old one restored.
