My Dad's 1971 Wolseley 18/85 has its original Veltone carpets which apart from being a little grubby are in excellent condition.

He mentioned this evening that he is going to clean them prior to refitting. He usually uses a spray cleaner and then uses a scrubbing brush but I was thinking that this might not be the right method of cleaning this type of carpet. Would a foam type cleaner that lifts the dirt from the fibres be better?

Any help on this much appreciated

I don't know if it's the right solution, but I've cleaned my carpet with a heavy duty hand cleaner, my workshop's soap, rubbing hard under water with a shoe brush. And rince until water is clear.

It doesn't damage the carpet at all.

I've cleaned my brocade seats and roof lining whith great results, in very short time!

Alright Andrew,
I used 'er indoors' Bissell professional carpet cleaner thing (while she wasn't about !!). Came up like a good 'un. Was a bit worried about it sucking some of the fibres off the rubber backing but not the case. You'd be amazed (or maybe not) at how much gunge comes out. Perhaps you can borrow/hire one ?
While I've got the opportunity if anyone has any Cumulus grey carpet bits to sell,let me know. Need the two sill pieces but would consider anything.
