1071 S oil dipstick

Hi chaps,
After the recent worn out oil drain plug thread fiasco, here a new surprise for me.
Any help would be much appreciated because I feel somewhat doubtful !
Which should be the right oil dipstick for a 1071S block (later one) over a 22G1128 four synchro gearbox ?
Which should be the distance between the dipstick collar and the min or max mark - and between those two marks, please ?
I poured 5 liters of oil in the engine yesterday evening, started it after dinner and let it run for a good 10 - 15 minutes.
The engine has a paper oil filter but no oil cooler. No oil on the garage floor, and the engine is clean - as far as possible.
BUT I just found this evening that the oil level is apparently about 5 mm BELOW the the min mark.
Trouble is I now understand why I drained so much oil a few days ago : much much more than 5 liters !!!!!
Should I say I was particularly doubtful and somewhat furious to discover it.
OR am I wrong to believe that my engine oil capacity is over 5 if not 6 liters ???

5 ltrs seems about right for my 'S' engine. certainly no more.

The manual says 8.5 pints for a manual transmission engine, 4.83 ltrs.
So 5 ltrs is ample.
Is the dipstick tube all the way down and seated on the block.?

Less than 5 liters, I agree.
That is what I am used to feed my other engines with. Slightly more for the oil cooler of my 1293 A+
No, the dipstick tube is not fully seated on the block.
I noticed that. I thought at first it may have been a (useless) adaptation for using a dipstick from another motor.
Couldn't surprise me given the former owner strange mechanical habits ...
Hence my question about the original dipstick characteristics.
Any measure anyone ? May help me to check what I actually have.

My 1071 motor has a metal dipstick tube and matching dipstick, I also have the nylon version of the tube and my dipstick won't fit into that properly, so maybe you have mixed up parts? here are the dimensions, all taken from the bottom face of the block.

This is a common problem that few people ever notice. The dipstick collars can vary by quite an amount. Before now, I have had to put 5 litres of oil in & mark the dipstick myself. That way at least I know it is correct.

Must admit I've never (sic) fitted 5 L of oil in my 1071 ....or 1275s .... unless its a new build where the cooler needs filling as well.... and, although its been a while, I don't think I used more than a standard 5L tin even then.
The dipstick in the picture above seems to have a thicker O ring/seal than any of mine. However, noting that the difference between the full and low marks on the dipstick is about 2cm (from memory) and that this is represents about a pint (<1/2L) then the thicker Oring would require about 50mil extra to top up.....
If I get a chance, I'll try to measure the lower block edge to full mark on my 1071 tomorrow....

As far as I know, the 1071 had the plastic oil dip tube, not the metal one. I am not sure whether that makes any substantial difference in the measurements of Bob as the dipstick itself also differs. I expect it wouldn't differ too much.

I'm with Bart on this one, the 1071 should have a plastic tube fitted. As such:
Here is a close up of the collar of an old stock dipstick, it has the rubber seal removed so the stick top half could be painted.
Must say that when they are fit together the rubber seal will just sit on top of the tube.

I've had a look at the parts books and found that the nylon tube and dipstick with the flat sealing ring were used between 1963 to '66, it then changed to the metal tube with a different dipstick with a tapered rubber seal. I'm guessing that it was changed to give a better sealing of the crankcase for the PCV system to work.
The measurements from the bottom of the block to the level marks are the same on both versions.
