Hi Paul,
yes,very close with your guess.
They are both 'Terry Hunter' seats circa 1974.
The 1st is the 'Carrera' and the 2nd(the high back) is the 'Easy Rider'.
Anyone would be forgiven for mistaking the 'Carrera' for a German 'Scheel' seathttp://www.alpinabmw2002.com/2010/08/scheel-sp ... ion-1.html, as it uses almost nearly all the same features ,with the big exception being the 'Scheel' has a high quality fibreglass shell and the 'Carrera' has a "crude" tubular frame.Your 'Carrera' at one point would have also had a head rest, which was very similar to a 'Microcell/Contour' adjustable, but on static shafts.

Your welcome Paul.
I knew I had a an old "ad" somewhere and here it is ,from 'Triple C' Nov '73.
The 'Easy Rider' in the pic' is the vinyl version.Still distinguishable by the flat top headrest though.
Interestingly though, while thumbing through some old mag's I found that when the 'Terry Hunter' brand changed to 'Huntmaster' in 1974 the 'Easy Rider' became the 'High Rider' and the 'Carrera' became the 'Targa'(see pic). Also ,another new brand name appeared on the scene,'Billover',unfortunately I do not know much about them except they were owned by a company called the 'Mill Accessories Group',but it looks like they took over the 'Paddy Hopkirk' and 'Terry Hunter' designs, even naming the 'Carrera' and 'Easy Rider','Carrera' and 'Easy Rider' :? :? .
I am confident though that your seats are the earlier 'Terry Hunter' ones ,as the later 'Huntmaster' ones would have had one of the following name patches sewn on(see links),I believe the patch with the huntsman on (red seat)was the 1974 logo ,unsure at the moment in which order the other 2 appeared(there is a 4th version) and the 'Billover' seats had a 'B' logo button on the centre panel.Your seats show no signs of ever having any of these.
Cheers Gareth

Sorry for digging up an old thread but I've just joined this forum as I wanted to say a big thanks to Gareth (if he's still around on here).

I recently bought this lovely seat on ebay for £25 for my retro race styled Eunos Roadster!

Image

After fruitlessly searching for hours for information on what the seat was, across multiple car forums a related search for Paddy Hopkirk seats led me here and to this post.

I now know that I am the proud owner of a Terry Hunter/Huntmaster Easy Rider! It would have bugged me endlessly if I hadn't found that out so many thanks!

Hi Drew ,
These 60's and 70's aftermarket seats are a bit of a "minefield".
Therefore,I am pretty sure you will find your seat is actually a 'Billover' High Back Easy Rider .Please see previous ad and listing.
Distinguished from the 'Huntmaster' by the 1 piece centre panel and the stepped in shoulders of the headrest.

Gareth

Indeed - thanks for clarifying that Gareth - I didn't note the Billover logo next to the advert, just the Huntmaster name above the seats.

Its a great seat for £25 (even if the foam in the base is virtually dust!). It was stored on an elderly ladies landing for many years apparently, rather than a shed, which has kept it in fairly good order. I'll probably have a like for like replacement base cushion made as the vinyl piping has snapped in places and the basketweave vinyl is fairly fragile.

I might struggle to find a matching one for the passenger side for the same price!

Does anyone know where these vintage seats can still be found? I'm especially interested the Terry Hunter Easy Rider (assuming the second photo at the top of the post is indeed that seat).

As with all second hand stuff its just a case of keeping your eyes peeled. Car boot sales, auto jumbles & the internet. Of course ebay is good if you have deep pockets but this sort of stuff does come up in the for sale section from time to time.

I was in a local scrap yard a few years ago getting something for my daughters fiesta and a Mini with Terry Hunter seats came in it also had the rear seats covered in the same material.
I made an offer of £25 and the guy who had no clue as to what they were accepted it.( it also had Wolfrace wheels which I didn't buy!)
They went in my son's mk3 Cooper S replica, he let them go with the car when he sold it.

my brother bought a series 2 landrover (with v8) and it had a pair of paddy hopkirks in the back, he didn't want them, so I claimed them for 'stock'

There's been a few cars with interesting seats in sold on Ebay, I particularly remember the Alfa Spyder with two mint type 1 Restalls in. Seller sold 'em separate for £500. Wish I'd kept my Sprinzel Rally 5s which I sold for peanuts last year!

Are Paddy Hopkirk bucket seats worth much with mini frames?

I have a pair in my loft

Dave :)

As most PH seats are 70's or later there is not a terrific demand for them. It's 60's seats that command the big bux.

Seeing this thread re surface, reminds me of two former members of the forum. Both Towners & Contour51 are no longer with us. Their input, knowledge & enthusiasm is much missed.
