Overtaking in an 850!

Well, I took the mrs micra to work to mot it yesterday and consequently I temporarily might have killed it by driving it like a mini (ooops)
So, i had to lend her my skoda and get out my super deluxe so I could get to work and fix the micra.. I know! terrible! (so she thinks)
Tonight I was feeling rather miffed with a learner driver doing 35 in a national speed limit so I went balls out and over took it. It did how ever feel like time stood still and I could have walked past the learner driver quicker for the time it took to overtake! Haha!
Has anybody else also ever felt this jubilation of actually overtaking in an 850?? Haha
Chris

Nice Story
reminds me when I was 17 and had my first 50cc honda motorbike. I was going down a hill doing close to 40mph and the car in front was going really slow.. My adrenalin kicked in and I went for it. I looked across to the driver as I drew level.. he was grinning and started to accelerate slightly.. just enough so I couldn't get past.. I had to give up and never tried to overtake anyone again!

In the sixties I ran an 850 Mini SDL for three years in my late teens/early twenties and had many Friday evening/Monday morning trips from Wrexham to Caernarfon along the A5. Overtook many cars on those journeys the secret being local knowledge and anticipation!

I guess it was somewhat similar to the feeling I had trying to overtake people in my 875cc Imp - it wasn't very useful until you hit 4000rpm, so you had to take a big run up at whatever you were overtaking!

I got 85 mph 4 up in my 850, I was over taking everything, although it was down hill with the wind behind
the car was never the same after that and the gear box packed up soon after
still happy days.

OK, I guess I'm not one for fast cars.
I use a bicycle daily.
My "modern" car is a 92 Opel Astra 1.4
My 2nd car is a 63 Land Rover 88 Station Wagon petrol
Back when my daily driver was a 61 Mini 850 with 12g295 and twin carbs I actually thought it was "fast". It would skittle right along with all the other small cars on the road.

Reminded me of my Suzuki AP50 many years ago. It was unrestricted and would do 60+ on a good day, but I was once overtaken by a push bike once when it wasn't running too well. The fella was pi**ing himself as he went past. One of the rings had gone when I got it home.

AP was i recall the quickest of the bunch
way back when i had my first bike - an SS50 5-speed that'd top out at about 43
but would still beat most of the fizzys, which were all fooked by that stage

The only way a AP would beat a Fizzy, is when they had a A100 motor put in 'em..............

I can remember one trip in my completely standard 850. It was to Luxemburg and I was rather late. I was really surprised how fast and well it did on the motorways, even up hills. I really 'tortured' it to the limit in terms of revs. Came upto somewhere near 160 kph on speedo when going down hill at one point. After few of hours driving, I arrived, only slightly too late and the 850 was totally fine with it, no problems when we subsequently proceeded together with some other Mini's onto France. Did have some 'scary' brake moments later on when going steep down hill during the actual Mini rally.

Mine was a post 76 export model so it didn't have the pedals, but was still unrestricted. FBT328S, I'd love to know where it is now. A pal had a fizzy and mine was quicker, but he was probably 4 stone heavier than me in those days!

If it didn't have peddles it was restricted, mine had peddles I'd cut about half inch of the closing side of the disk valve and raised the exhaust port 5mm iirc . It did 74 on the clock, which actually turned out to be 68mph. According to the bike cop and radar that got me. No 'sixty' kit either...........
