What do old motoring duffers do ? Hillclimbing
Being of an age I felt it my duty to find out how less than 4 minutes of motorsport for £111 could seem like a good deal, or something similar
Encouraged by others, last night I seem to have entered for Shelsey at the end of the month

I tend to agree with Tim, hillclimbing is poor value for money compared to alot of other events you can do (there again Tim just remind me how long those CR65's cost/last again ?? ) but the Shelsley meeting at the end of the month is more of a 'social' being a classic/nostalgia meet, lots of old cars, car clubs etc not just the usual 'drag your car along to a hill in the middle of nowhere with no spectators, no facilities ,do three timed runs against modern Euroboxes and go home' type of deal !
Tim, it's going to be fun just watch the banking !

I'm a great fan of Hillclimbing & have had many really enjoyable events. I was even quite good at one time.

I'd be tempted to join you IF I had a car that was suitable.

Guess what we ended up mending last week. Mini driveshaft + hardy spicer on one side and 1100 on other (snapped). We were able to put him in touch with local who had a spare shaft (oddball one I gather) . Customer is now looking for a spare
I should be doing Croft, Oulton, Brands and Silverstone with HSCC Niall
This car will do 0-60 in 2.2 secs. Our local with the last remaining Terrapin with an A series can only manage 0-60 in 2.6 secs. 4g off the line!

Hillclimbing and sprinting certainly gives less track time per pound, but can be considerably cheaper in the long run as you can share a car and there is less maintenance over a year (I keep telling myself this - not sure it's true! ) ... and I'm not a (very) old duffer at 37!
What it does offer is a chance to share the car at the same events and a different discipline to racing, rather than having 10 laps to get it right you have to get everything 100% right in a single lap - often there are 2 or 3 cars split by less than half a second - not bad for completely different cars and drivers.

Having done a bit of both, I can confirm that Hillclimbing cost about 1/10 of running a circuit car for a season. although the entrance fees can be high you don't have the constant torrent of expenditure that you have with circuit racing.

The entry fee's for the Sprints and Hillclimbs can be considered expensive if you factor in the amount of time you get on track, I do it because I get to use the car rather than just look at it in a field full of other Minis (nothing wrong with that though), the social side is also good, camping for the two day events and spending time with friends, also you get the personal challange of trying to beat your time, in the DEWS class all the cars are so different in spec trying to compare times is pointless (unless we all start to swap cars ), people are running 3:9's / 3:7's / 3:4's, limited slips or not, 1293's / 1380's / 998's, Hydro and dry, Turbo's / Alloy Heads ect ect ect, in the roadgoing class that variation is good because no matter what you have you can go out and have some fun at your own pace.

What do you run in the DEWs championship - Steve keeps trying to persuade me to bring my S out for a few events. Trouble is I'm normally entered in the Force at them or competing elsewhere.

I'm running a MK1 1293 S, there's a good mix of S's, Coopers and Mini's, all at different spec's, one of the fastest MK1's is Pauls Island Blue car, some youtube in car footage of the car from last weekend here
