will post some pics soon, but i have an original used red carpet set for a remote box late mk 1 , front wheel arch pieces have the felt, front and rear pieces are rubber backed, they came out of a white "66 car and are really really good, i dont know how to value them any idea ???????????

Does anyone have any pictures of how the carpet would have been originally fitted around a magic wand gearstick??? I have just put a small hole in mine but I think I might need to make the hole larger because it gets in the way of selecting some gears properly.

I presume then that the carpet goes around the black rubber boot which goes around the bottom of the gearstick, is this correct??

as a matter of interest....what is this particular red carpet actually made of? It doesn't seem deep piled,tufted etc...it looks quick short and bristly.

Its made of stuff called "Veltone" this is a rubber backing with short fibres of nylon applied directly to the rubber. It has a sort of coarse bristly velvet finish & is fairly hard wearing but the backing tends to perish & the "velvet" flocking does eventually wear off in high "traffic" areas.

I have a set that colour out of my S. Someone kindly removed it with a Stanley knife many years ago. The front section is trashed. Is it still the case that no one makes anything close as a replacement?

Newton used to make a similar carpet but it wasn't rubber backed. That went out of production quite some time ago due to changes in manufacturing and has been replaced by their current moulded products which despite being good quality are nothing like the above. Some of the colours are also miles off (especially Grey !)

Newton never offered a "Veltone" type carpet, the people who did were the "British Mini Company" who changed their name to the "British Trim Company" they are now known as BAS INternational. Their trim & carpet was absolutely excellent, but they lost out to Newton in the Mini Trim stakes. The company still offers their non Rubber backed "Veltone" type carpet (which they call "Autolux"), but only in black. Since pulling out of the Mini market they have specialised in Jag trim and are I believe still doing very well.

this carpet game is a laugh.
I currently have some very manky 'veltone' (now i know what it's called..thanks Mark) in the car at the moment, but it's falling to bits. I actually what to preserve it, by taking it out and storing it somewhere and replacing it with something else.
As the car basically has been (and still gets) thrashed to pieces...poor thing has done 3 Monte's, the carpet doesn't need to be some lovely deep piled stuff..but it should at least have something that looks basically right. I'm not a fan of this moulded stuff and i only want one heel mat...trying to find something that would 'be in keeping' with the car is proving to be tricky.
