oil filter seal

hi everyone well last night i decided to do an oil change on my 62 super well having only owned a rover cooper before with the spin on filters i had no idea what hell i was getting into after dismantling the filter i found out that theres was a rubber seal missing for the bolt and spring however managed to find something to replace it however i cant get the top seal to well seal properly everytime i turn the engine on oil gushes from the top of the filter does anyone have any tips on how to get these to fit in a more efficient way that im doing? the help is greatly appreciated

you mean the top rubber seal between the housing and canster then its a B**ch to be honest!

convert to spin on :) what i have done with mine got fed up of leaks

haha yeah that seal i can see why they moved onto spin off later on wasnt the best idea having the seal seperate from the casing itself :S

It is a silly idea really just try relocate it in or use the old seal if its good

It is always worth having a pocket mirror in your tool box that way you can check to see it it is seated square, also good for when you get cr*p in your eye, use a smear of grease to stick the seal in place whilst tightening up the bolt

A mechanic friend of mine who has been working on minis for 28 years has told me before that he removes the oil filter head from the block with the cannister attached. He does the filter change after that, so that he can fit the seal and cannister properly and then he bolts it back on with a new gasket.

If, with 28 years' experience, someone has resorted to that, well, that says something about the design (and explains why you are struggling)

yeah well i finally managed to get is done yesterday SUCCESS!! but i must admit im glad you dont have to do it to often getting oil dripping in my eyes and hair is not fun
