Has anyone tried this technique?

My question is how does one choose a more modern gauge that has the right capillary dimensions to ensure the calibration of the old gauge is not totally thrown off?
One can obviously test it by submerging the bulb in a kettle of boiling water and see if it reads close to 100 degrees C, but I was wondering if there is something I should look for when choosing a donor.
The gauge to fix is a capillary Speedwell 120 degree C "Autotemp Sweden" gauge.
