Hide Details FROM:Morecambe Car Club BCC:steveenti@yahoo.co.uk Message flagged Wednesday, 4 April 2012, 17:43Diamond Geezers – Sixty Years Young!
Morecambe Car Club celebrates its sixtieth
birthdays during 2012 and is planning to
commemorate the achievement by holding an
“Illuminations Diamond Run” on June 16th. All
road legal cars will be eligible to take part and it
is hoped that anyone who in the past six decades
has competed in, marshalled on, watched or have
been annoyed by the clubs renowned
Illuminations Rally passing their front door (!) is
invited to attend. The idea of this purely social occasion is that old friends and
adversaries can meet up to exchange tall tales, revisit some of the sites of former
glories or disasters, right a few wrongs, settle old scores in a relaxed atmosphere or
simple go for a drive through some of the most wonderful scenery in Britain.
Hopefully those who take part will bring along the car in which they have competed
but this is not a pre requisite.
An informal get together at the Clarendon Hotel, Morecambe on the Friday evening
prior to the event is planned. Entrants and or interested parties can meet up to swap
stories over a drink or meal and plan their route for the following day. Amongst
those expressing their interest in the event are several past Illuminations winners so
there is every prospect of lengthy “fat chewing”!
Fred Bent is in charge of planning the route and intends to line up the cars on
Morecambe Promenade, the traditional Illuminations Rally starting point and sign on
as usual in the art deco Midland Hotel. The first car will leave the seafront at 08:30
and the suggested route will retrace sections of the great routes from the dozens of
Illuminations. You can be as ambitious or relaxed as
you wish and either follow the suggested route,
choose your own or simply pick and mix from some
of the Lake Districts classic roads. Winster Ford Tow
Tops, Jackson Ground, and the infamous passes of
Hardknott, Wrynose, Kirkstone etc are all options.
The tour will pass through some of the test sites
used on the early events and again on the Classic
Illuminations of the nineties and It is hoped that the
more adventurous can be tempted to have a run
around one or two.
Morecambe Car Club Founder member Arnold
Eastwood competing in the early 1950's
Caught in Winster Ford!
The event will finish at around 17:30
in Ashleys Field Low Bentham, where
there will be a barbecue and hog roast with live
music and of course a licensed bar.
The entry fee of £60 for a crew of two includes
Detailed final instructions
A fully detailed Route Book and a Check Point Record Card
A Monte Carlo Style Rally Plate
Finishers award and Certificate
2x tickets for the finish Barbecue and Hog Roast
There will also be a concours awards for the most interesting car and or crew.
Fred will be happy to chat to interested parties about the event and he may be
contacted on 01524 221933 or e-mail fredbent@orchard-ho.freeserve.co.uk
For those wishing to stay in Morecambe area either before and or after the run
accommodation is reasonably plentiful and you can get information on line or by
contacting the Lancaster City Council accommodation booking hotline (Monday -
Saturday 10am - 4pm) on 01524 582393.
Unfortunately there are only a very few rooms available at the Midland Hotel but if
you wish to stay there please check the availability on their website
www.englishlakes.co.uk/hotels/midland and book with the hotel direct.
We have however reserved a number of rooms at the Clarendon Hotel, close to the
start of the event at a special rate of £30 per person per night for B & B. These rooms
are likely to be snapped up rapidly so it is recommended that you contact the hotel
ASAP, mentioning Morecambe Car Club and the Illuminations Diamond Run – Tel
01524 410180 or via their web site www.clarendonhotel.

For those who have a yearning for the great outdoors
and wish to spend a night under the stars camping or
caravans will be permitted in Ashleys field.

Oh dear!

The date clashes with the mini festival at Brands so will not be able to take part.

myself, my old man and smoke grey did the 200 mile plus road run yesterday, quite simply the wettest i have seen the passses in the lake district, the 1293 dad was driving shat both its fuel pumps causing dad to retire near coniston, 77 years old laid onder the back of the car twating the pumps on an uphill hairpin on hardknott pass in torrential rain , what a man  nothing fazed the old bugger at all, the special tests were optional and he was having a go on them to, steves orangebox was at home on the passes as its previous owner , mr mapple, had launched it over them many times ,[ but not as quickly as steve :D ] my 998 coped with everything as well, dad got a finishers award because the regs stated 25 % of the time card had to be complete , dad and co driver dave culley had managed 50% when they retired and got the car to the finish on a truck  , all in all a real hard day , no competition , just hard hard conditions, had a bit of a play on the tests but couldnt get my "mad" head on without an official clock   smoke is going to post some pics and will give a brief outline of what was a classic route , i will have a link soon to some in car footage of the passes and a special test ;)

Yes what a wet day!! Never seen anything like it, we got to the bottom of Blea Tarn and it was a FLOWING :o fast and deep for over a hundred yards . We started the day with slowboy in front then us in the Orangebox followed by slowboy senior in the ex-rally car. The weather had started a bit naff and steadly got worse, incredible amount of water on the roads with it splashing over the roofs at times , though our cars never missed a beat other than slowboys 1293 with fuel pump problems. Sods law say's it to happen in that weather, never had a problem with it before :x and i felt sorry for Peter out with is old nav, he was loving it back in the lanes again 8-)

The missus took some pics on her phone, she sat in with me, never having done anything like this before. She was really worried at the start and 20 yards in to the first test she was screaming  says i'm kin' mental :!:  After a couple of wrong slots early on she got me round the 200 mile route no problem, said she really enjoyed it, and even enjoyed the later tests, but still can't believe how quick myself and slowboy go on the tests ;) Good day and good crack, and even had orangebox's original driver award us our finishers awards.

The weather at the start, note this is taken from inside, and was'nt to bad at this point!
