Whoever made that flimsy ash tray by taking an impression from an original has absolutely NO IDEA what an industrial quality GRP mould looks like!

The lunatic is asking £4000 as an opening bid.

You could make one just like that for about £40!

It'll be fun to see if any fool actually bids on it.

Also its amusing how it was found in a closed down factory, as the original factory that made them is still in business & makes all the GRP crap for Blackpool Illuminations. I can only imagine that the closed down factory referred to closed down because it was making very poor quality GRP moulds that wouldn't last more than a dozen impressions.

Surely an original mould would not have been fibre glass? £200 packing and private feedback!

I think the original mould would probably have been fibreglass, but it would have been at least 1 - 2" thick with some sort of framework, to help peel & release it.

An industrial GRP mould IS NOT an insubstantial bit of kit.

technically thats not a 'master mould' its a 'negative copy' thats been made using the painted version

i doubt you would get more than a couple of versions from it before the thing started to break up, never mind the complete lack of a sacrificial edge for trimming back.

a proper master mould would be 1/4 - 1/2 thick, with reinforcing wooden battens glassed into the mould, with a thick rim for the trimming knife to run round - it would be so heavy that one preson would struggle to lift it.

you could make a 'negative copy' like that for about 40 quid (as mark says), i guess the other 3960 quid would cover the rent on 'ye olde garage unit' to get your back story right..........


edit - bit of a posting race between me and mark there!

I'll also go with this - we make loads of grp master tooling, usually with a polished gelcoat surface - never just raw grp - its to bloody thin any way
