Inside my barn find factory overhauled S motor was a 648/649 cam. Motor was a gold seal from 1972 so this cam was clearly installed after the fact. The motor is all std with 431 S std pistons too. Has the 163 head not polished too. This motor has never been ran. So question is will this cam be streetable at all? Want to used it on the freeway and in traffic with a 3.1/2 gear set. Okay cam or should one just invest in a modern cam thanks

That's a nice barn find. 8-)

The 648/9 is a full race cam. The power will come in at about 4000 rpm with a big valve head.
Not very practical around town in my opinion and with that diff ratio you may well struggle to "get on the cam" below 70 mph on the freeway.

Sounds like a fun engine though and would be a blast to drive as is.

Nothing wrong with the tractability of a 649. It might develope lots of power after 3500 rpm, but that does not mean it doesn't develope any power under that. perfectly practicle hot road cam for weekend use.

I would NEVER use a 649 in a road car. Why on earth would I want to do that? There are so many better options.

Surely a 649 will jus bog down all the time with a 3.1 diff ? I'm with Verg on this, putting a 649 in an 'around town' car don't make sense ! Loads of modern cams do !

Best 1275 option, the super sprint.

Let's face it, minis are old. They are slow, they are noisy and crap.

You can get a very silly one with very bad manners and it will be comprehensively beaten off the lights by an old diesel turbo golf.

You may as well leave your diesel turbo to do all the nice things like drive the kiddies to tesco and save the mini for a road going racing car. No holds barred.

Weber 48, 320/320 cam, 37/31 valves, 13:1 CR, 3.6FD, 1:1.04 Drops, Plate LSD, 1445cc, no carpets, pretty much straight through exhaust.....

At least when I am driving at normal TDi speeds it feels like a fairground ride and sounds like something off Santa Pod.

Fit the race cam, or sell it and get a Passat 130.
