my brother has just bought a mega cheap freelander knowing that the head gasket had popped
he tugged the head of at the weekend to discover this........
note that the gunge has been so bad that its made its way round the breathers and into the throttle body - i think it was trying to eat itself!

it hadnt actually done that many miles, its a one lady owner thing
as soon as the fault showed its self she stopped and got it recovered, the garage quoted 600 odd quid to do the job so she moved it on.
like my brother pointed out, the fact you can see green antifreeze in the mix shows that it hasnt just been getting topped up with water for months!
the rest of the car is in fantastic condition

eurgh! normally it looks like mayonaise, but this looks like it's full of nutella! (or someone has had a dirty protest!)
how do you clear that off throughout the engine?

My wife had one very similar a few years back, properly cooked it. There's a conversion you can get that diverts more water to the top end That's meant to work well.
