Hi. I have aquired some 7.5 S disc hub assemblies which are in need of a refurb. Is anybody on here able to explain the best way of removing ball joints from the hub when the hub and shaft are off the car. It is stubborn and every time I try to unwind it the hub slips out of the vice. The offset shape of the hub is frankly the most awful fit for a vice and whoever designed this clearly gave no thought to the poor sod who would be trying to dismantle them 40 years later when off the car!

I use the deep socket, on a air powertool, but the electric powertools, will also do the job.

Or a deep socket with an impact driver. You 'just' need to get get enough shock into it to start loosening it.

Failing that do you have a spare frame around that you can bolt it into temporarily?

Or use a piece of hardwood to make up the difference in thickness between the front and rear dimensions - if that makes sense??

If you place the outer face of the hub against one face of the vice then tighten up until the inner edge (can't remember if the front or rear is thicker) is held by the other face of the vice there will be a gap between the other inner edge of the hub and the vice. Find a piece of wood the same dimension (or slightly thicker) than the gap. This will allow the vice to grip both edges of the inner and outer faces of the hub.

The appropriately ring spanner will then loosen pretty much any nut; no matter how big the gorilla that originally installed it posting.php?mode=reply&f=3&t=4129&sid=c ... 18ef24060f#

i just use the williams superslim ball joint spanner and flog them off.

works a treat, i did some at the weekend

That's what I use and it always works. A very useful spanner with more than one use.

aye, it will undo the bolt on the pre-verto clutchs as well.

mines had some good flogging over the years!!!

I have an old cv joint to which i have welded some 2" box section to the back of it( where the driveshaft would have gone) .I then clamp the box section in the vice ,so the cv is pointing upwards. Slide the hub over the cv and undo the swivels as normal .
