MK3 rear parcel shelf resto.

Post by 360gts »

Gave up on trying to find some leather grain hardboard.......doesn't seem to exist anymore.
So, went about trying to restore the original. This car has been in my barn since 1975...was taken apart by the previous owner.. (who passed away)

Everything is there....boxes of bits etc. all there. The parcel shelf was in three pieces.....luckily, the original speaker covers were still there.
I was able to join the three pieces back together. However, there was quite an obvious visible joint.
Carefully removed a few thin slivers of the top layer...and used a corresponding piece to cover the joint. You can see where I took some of the pieces...that area is covered by the rear seat. Had some vinyl spray paint mixed to the color (as per Peter's color..BABIES NAPPY)
Now to the problem....the hardboard is warped....looking for some tips on how to get it flat again....

Wet it and then keep it (weighed down) completely flat while it dries out again?

As above Dermott but by using two sheets of used shutter ply, one each side, a few screws around and close to the edge and through the speaker vent holes - and screw them tightly together.

Just done the same to flatted the C post finishers before I re-cover them

As Australian wearers of slouch hats (and NZers with the lemon squeezer hats) we used this method to keep the brim part flat.

I did try wetting it and using a flat board with the weights. It did stay flat for a few days...then curled again.
Maybe I didn't put enough water on it....will try again and leave it under the pressure for a bit longer this time.
Update then.
Thanks to both of you.
Cheers

How about just glueing it to some 3 mm ply cut to the shape of your parcel shelf . That will do the job and you won’t see it anyway . … Shirley

I have a spare flat one here...thought about that idea....was concerned that it may be too thick!
