Works cars changing switches every event, why?

As title really, been reading the red book about works cars and have a particular interest in the electrics.
Not looking to reproduce them, but improve the electrics on my Hill climber, in a “period” way.
Wondered if anyone knew why on the later cars they changed the switches after each event, did they not use relays ?
