Dry Suspension strut difference Cooper-Cooper S

Post by Fanfaniracing »

Can anyone point me out the difference in the alloy Struts on Cooper/Cooper S Dry Suspension models?

In the Mechanical Service Parts List AKD 3509 they are listed up with different Part numbers:

Standard Cooper: 2A7375 or 21A1031
Cooper "S": 21A1302

Is it a difference in Material, length or something else?

Many thanks for help!

I have a funny feeling that I mentioned this during an article about the rear hydro suspension. It was a change in the loading of the S hydro displacers. Quite minor difference in length and material the same mild steel.

When I had mine off - for the article, I just made a new pair from 18mm dia stainless

hi Peter!

Thank you for your quick answer. I am looking for the dry Suspension System...

In the AKD3509 Parts List the Rubber Cones are listed with the same Part number for Cooper & Cooper S

Apart from strut length, the other difference in dry strut part numbers is usually down to the size of the spring seat for the cone spring to compress on, which increases the spring rating as the seating area gets wider. (eg. Traveller/Countryman/Van/Pickup/Cooper S).
Minispares website has some detailed info on many of the part numbers and the differences:-
https://www.minispares.com/21a1684-susp ... t-13-wheel

21A1684 is 308mm and 21A1684S is 315mm both large cone spring seat base.
21A1683 was 307mm with small cone spring seat base
21A1683 with a circle round the number 3 was 312mm, small spring seat base
21A1302 large spring seat Cooper S 317mm
21A1031 small spring seat base Cooper 314.5mm, GPO van to 1961 was 315.5mm

Hi-Lo suspension struts also featured an increased diameter rubber cone support lip by 1/2" to stiffen the suspension.
Original 1970's Hi-Lo Ad:-
viewtopic.php?p=90041#p90041

Strut - Rear Suspension (1984-2000)
21A1684 - "Genuine alloy strut that fits between the rubber cone and the knuckle joint on the rear suspension. This was originally fitted to Mini Vans and Estates and then to 12 inch wheel models from 1984 to 2000. It is longer and has a wider flange to the cone than the earlier saloon strut (21A1683) which is now obsolete. Can be used for early models but may need shortening to achieve the correct ride height."
