I recently downloaded the SC Parts catalogue, mainly because there are some very good assembly drawings in there. I was though surprised by one of the drawings. It shows the female connector on the gear change shaft exiting the differential with a spring and a bush in the connector (see screenshot below). Is that correct as I don't remember seeing the bush and spring when I stripped mine down?

I have seen this on 3 synchro magic wands, but only on the lower cup of the shift rod that meets the gear stick. I don’t know if that’s correct, but that’s what I’ve seen Somerford says it’s for “direct gear change” gearboxes:

I can imagine it would help reduce rattles on a magic wand, so having one on the top linkage might be a good idea for my mini (if it fits)

my Moke with a direct shift has the "smoking pipe " shaft (items 33/34 in that drg;) that shaft has the nylon cup & spring that keeps some of the load on the gear stick .. seem to remember these shafts with deep female holes have flat bottoms so that the spring locates with the nylon pad sitting on top .. willing to be wrong in my assumptions but not sure if the top linkage has a "Flat Bottom" to take the spring
