Does anyone know what dates these A+ gearbox's were used on Minis? I vaguely remember some A+ gearbox's were used on 1275 GT"s while still using an A series block and wondered if the 4818 was that box??

1979 to early 1982.

They are probably the weakest case they made, very prone to crack the centre web. If you have one, have a good look around the threads for the Mainshaft Bearing Retainer, almost certainly there'll be some.

Yes, they were fitted with A Series engines, I have one in the workshop awaiting overhaul presently, for the original owner.

So around late 78 to mid 79 when the first A+ blocks came out then they went onto DAM2886? I've owned 1 x 1275 GT that had the 4818 then the rest Ive owned had the DAM2886 which was from a 1980 GT

They may have. There was a period when there was a mix of A and A+ Blocks being fitted.

My first Moke, Purchased new by me, was dated October 1979 had an A+ Block and a 4818 Gearbox. The engine I have in the workshop was 4 cars before mine and had an A Series on the 4818. These engines were in all technical ways, 1275GT engines, imported by our local Leyland Factory as CBUs. There was a 6 - 12 month lag here from the UK.

The 2886's actually came after the 4818's. They appear to have only been n production a short time, less than a year and likely were being fitted in the same period as the 4818's.

My 1275GT was first registered in March 1979.It had an A series engine. The gearbox was a DAM 2886 with the 3168 laygear and 18mm mainshaft
nose. The gear cluster has A type gears, not compatible with A plus gears.I still have the complete unit (in parts). The car met an unfortunate end.

That's all very interesting stuff. It seems as thought there was no definitive cutoff point with the gearboxes as opposed to the A/A+ blocks transition ie at #26400.Thanks for replying.
