New Rubber Crosses

I have just changed the rubber crosses on my mini. I have torqued them at 8.5 ft lbs. The rubbers on the crosses have become oval and and one of them seems to be coming out of its position. I really do not know if I am doing something wrong. I read that they should be torqued between 8.5 to 10 ft lbs. is this the correct torque.
Thank you

No, you do up the lock nuts on the U bolts so that one thread is showing.

It's also important to nip them up when the wheels are at normal ride height, ie, from a pit, on ramps or the like, not when the wheels are dangling in the air.

Spider is dead right. The natural position of the drive shafts and the rubbers is when the shafts are being driven.
Another good idea is to take off the sharp inner edge on the steel couplers. This tends to gnaw away at the inner ends of the rubbers
