Mk 1 Austin Cooper Grill, Surround and whiskers

Post by Rondon73 »

Good Morning Folks,

Hope all are well. I am looking for some help/advice as per. My mini project has been on/off for a few years now due to health problems. I'm guilty of making posts, then something happens and it is months/years before I reply or read the post. I apologise for this as I fully understand this can be annoying when someone has taken the time to reply. I will try to do better in future.

I am trying to fit the MK1 Austin Cooper S front bright work to a 90s Rover mini.

I am having issues trying to fit it. I have 60 plus mini books. In the pictures even in the same book. The area that can be seen of the front panel varies from picture to picture. some you clearly see the front panel above the outside of the surround and down the outer side.

When I try to fit the surround it doesn't sit flat with the front panel. Do you need to bend the surround so that it sits flush? I am not sure if it requires spacers or if it is due to being a modern repop.

I was hoping that someone would be kind enough to advise. I was hoping that someone would be kind enough to give me measurements from the indicators to the surround and the whiskers in the x and Y axis.

I can post a diagram of the required measurements if that would help.

Any and all help appreciated. I'm gonna add reminders to my calendar so that I don't have anxiety and mood problems and forget to check back.

Thanks

R

The later front panels are indeed a different shape, and the indicator plinths are bigger so it can be problematic trying to fit an original moustache, though the grill itself is fine.

Mini Spares make a slightly different shaped moustache and 'whisker' ends to overcome this though.

Please post the measurements pics so we can all chip in though ;-)

On the Minispares info it adds the following

This item is in deep chrome on brass as per the original 1960s type to help prevent rusting. It has now been modified to fit with our grilles to all genuine front panels that are available plus the originals.

Cheap overseas copies on steel are prone to rust and nearly 5/8" too high on left hand side creating poor fitment or impossible correct fitment.

Maybe part of the problem?
