The Midget Pub in Abingdon, Oxfordshire to be renamed...

Post by mab01uk »

"Thousands of people have signed a petition to reverse plans to change the name of a pub after it was labelled "offensive".
Owners Greene King announced last week that The Midget in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, would be changed after more than 1,300 people signed a petition.
Since the announcement, a counter petition to restore the pub's name has received the support of 2,600.
The pub was named after the eponymous MG car that had been built at a factory in the town until the 1970s - but the term is more-commonly known as a derogatory way of referring to people with dwarfism. Greene King said the pub's name would be changed to 'The Roaring Raindrop' in tribute to the last ever record-breaking car by MG to be manufactured in Abingdon."

The pub is located in a road called 'Midget Close' Abingdon OX14 5NR so presumably the council will also have to rename the offensive road...
I suppose the 'Midget and Sprite Club' could be renamed the 'Spridget Club' which is the term many car enthusiasts use to describe both versions of the sports car or maybe all MG Midgets will have to be badge engineered into Austin-Healey Sprites?

What a nonsense. Same hype as over here started by the Greens. One is not allowed to say indian any more although the Indians in North America call themselves in this way, see North American Indian Counsil.

A green female minister of Northrhine-Westphalia had to apologize to her party because she admitted having liked to play an Indian when she was a girl.

Gentleman, a German Raggae-singer, who lived for many years on Jamaica was accused of adapting a culture of black people.

Oh god, I played for many years in a white blues band and so was adapting a foreign black culture. Disgusting!

Well, the culture-police is all around you like the former Gestapo and watching you.

Obviously the days a numbered for my favourite travel sweets…….

Maybe it would be more acceptable to the “over sensitives” if they were called Dwarfism Gems ..? People need to get over them selves.and focus on whats really important…..

On a more serious note, this is air brushing away history, the pub is so named because of Abingdon's important connection with the MG Midget…….now gradually being eroded, because of an incorrect association.

Effectively , they are saying word “Midget” should be banned completely regardless of meaning or association….not a healthy situation

World's gone nuts, everything has to have a label so that people don't have to decide between right and wrong.

Some brands of Midget Gem sweets were in the news in 2022 for the same reason.... :(

All I can say is thank Christ that this forum hasn't gone woke,

I learned all about plain, straight talking, say it as it is and NON-wokeness in Australia in the mid to late 60's. Was there last year for a reunion of the old and bold and to a man (am I allowed to say that.....?) they were all the same plain speaking blokes - and I was STILL referred to as Pete the Pom from the workshops section! But outside our old and bold circle of veterans, seemingly these 'derogatory' phrases like Pete the Pom are pretty-well banned!

Now for the good news....... If there are any forumers about to loose sleep or upset or even the oncoming of a bit of PTSD about Abingdons Magic Midget pub losing its name and returning Abingdon to the doldrums, then take heart and put those anxiety pills away.

Abingdon, seemingly has a NEW claim to fame. It seems that we have the highest concentration of Turkish Barbers shops........., probably in the universe. Outside Turkey of course!

So there is a glimmer of hope here in Abingdonshire

Who are these people ? the ones that are 'upset' . I have never met one of them ,where do they hide ? I guess behind a keyboard . I also am convinced that no 'short' person was upset at a pub name which was in existence long before they were born and with a genuine right to use the name Midget . as has been said the world has gone mad . democracy is gone and we are pandering to unelected fundamentalists . The last general election here in Ireland the Green Party got 6 percent of the vote ( effectively 94 percent of the voting electorate didn't want anything to do with them ) and demanded several ministerial portfolios as there was a coalition . during the last few years the green transport and energy minister has signed ministerial orders blocking infrastructure projects and LNG plants. oil and gas exploration etc, all the energy is supposed to come from wind turbines and solar panels etc etc ,single handedly he has set the country back 20 years in essential infrastructure , we have Km after Km of cycle lanes with nobody using them , city centre retailers are suffering due to low footfall as we don't have sufficient and effective public transport .we now even have radio adverts by electric car manufacturers using young children asking their parents why they don't have an electric car to save their future . I know I have strayed from the original issue but my point is why do we allow the 'tail' to wag the 'dog' ? we have an election again in the next few weeks and polls indicate an eradication of the greens ,it is one thing to be a fundamentalist BUT an inept fundamentalist is far worse . back to the original issue I thing we need to re-evaluate our responses to these people that are 'upset' on behalf of others and just tell them to 'get a life' you IDIOT , not change the name of a historic Pub to appease them . sorry for the stray in topic but I just had an encounter at the door with a Green Party election canvaser and it really felt good to bring him down a peg and point out the reality of democracy and fundamentalism. thanks everyone for allowing my rant which is now over I promise .G

No, I claim that we here have the most. Popping up even in the smallest towns. More barber shops than mobile phone shops and shisha bars put together!

Hang on lads. My late brother in law had a Midget which he always drove as if he stole it, most of the time sideways but I must admit he was the best amateur Rally driver I have ever sat alongside but he did enjoy protecting rabbits when they appeared on the road in front of him and slowed down - grrrrhh!

A pub in Retford , Nottinghamshire , called " The Black Boy " , The landlady removed the sign from outside because of the pub itself could be targeted by anti-racism protesters in 2020 , Yep worlds gone fookin mad and even more now with Adolf Starver in charge :( :( :(

Recently, an opposition MP stood up in Parliment (Over here) and was blah blah blahing on about how the Government was wasting money....he said...it's like throwing money into a black hole🤣 Well, I don't have to tell you what a raucous that comment caused...he was severely reprimanded and had to withdraw his comment as it was deemed very offensive!!! Definitely, OTT!

Oh that one's OK over here in Police State Britain. Chancellor Rachel Thieves manages to fit it into every bloody sentence.
