Back in the 60's when I was rebuilding a 997 engine (I think) I was advised to leave off the second oil ring, the one below the gudgeon pin on a 5 ring piston. Have I remembered correctly or was it in a dream?

It depends on the ring design and bore (hone) finish, but yes, you usually can leave a ring off.

Both oil rings are 1 piece ones.

Ah,,, OK,,, they aren't brilliant at all. I'd run a full set of rings with them. If you wanted to change to a set that had the 3 or 4 piece oil control rings, then sure, leave one off.
