Hi,

I'm just finishing installing the brake servo and associated brake pipes on my MK2 Cooper S. I'm not sure how the pipes were originally routed and would like to get it correct on my resotoration. The picture below shows how the routing was, when I bought the car in 1985. These are not the pipes I bought it with though. I replaced the original pipes in the late 80s but remember that I copied the originals using copper, as seen in the picture here. I'm replacing them with new copper nickel.

I've seen so many variations but not sure which is correct. Any ideas?

For a hydro car that is pretty much correct . Contact Fred at nippycars as he has the brake pipes for that made up to the perfect shape and there not expensive either … Shirley

I'd like to buy a pre-bent set. I tried loads of times to get them right.

Yours are pretty well basic pipes Floor manager. Or have you got a servo fitted?

The problem with brake pipes is that to make a set from scratch, you've got to(?) have the original UN-bent pipe handy. No amount of photos will really do the job. And can you imagine doing a quick sketch drawing? Just sooooooo many angles in sooooo many directions......

Mine's a MK2 S, as in the photo. I bought sets from minispares but sodded them up, a wrong bend and they work-harden. I asked Nippy Cars but they come the right length but flat. I did in the end make up some which are okay from a length of pipe but it took me a while to flare them. Would love to have some pre-bent from somewhere.

As already been mentioned i got a set from Nippy Cars, Fred .. so long as you are not in a rush Fred gets them done & shipped they come with the Clamp & Pre Bent to shape & size

I've been making my own from copper nickel pipe from automec, which I've used because they claim it's made in the UK and pressure tested. I've got the copper pipes to copy that I put in well over 30 years ago (where that time's gone, I don't know, seems like yeaterday as they say). I remember that I carfully copied the rusted steel pipes as far as possible at the time. steel pipes long gone, so i'm now copying those copper pipes. So there's bound to be a bit of difference but can't too far out.

However, I can't find the copper clutch pipe that came off it a few years ago. I didn't know I had this picture so I tried to remember how it went. Think I may have got a bit too creative wih it. Should it have been just a simple upside down U at the top and straight down to the flexible pipe conection, as in my old picture? i've added a slight S to it to keep the pipe closer to the master cylinder.

If possible I like to try and finish off any threads I have created so that if someone comes here looking for information in the future, there is some sort of conclusion. So that said, here's some pictures of the final servo installation. If anyone sees anything not quite as it should be, do please let me know.

Can I suggest that anyone who's following this thread and into a bit of pipe bending, that one of the best ever modifications to a mini is to extend the clutch slave cylinder bleed nipple out to the front of the block. Designed by one of our very own. Maybe this simple modification could be put into The Knack section.
