Any idea how this would have been fitted originally…? (Pre cable ties)

Most were fitted using specialist screws that fed back through the grille and had a flat plate to rest against the slats at the back. The front had a knurled knob usually. I just searched on ebay and found this A35 one, scroll through the pics to see the fixings. I have seen plasterboard fixings used to good effect as they work in a similar way, but might need a washer over the screw head.

Way back when I was a young lad in the 1960s and had an A35, I remember the muff fixings very well. Very similar to the "club badge" fixings. Screw and metal strip but muff had a round "nut." The badges had a "T" fixing. I still have several 1960's Motor Club badges - Banks & local. Those were the days. Not like the "do nut, street racing generation" I have read about today.
