22G68 Gearbox / 22G83 Laygear - Parts?

Post by rogerotto66s »

I purchased this gearbox simply as a “learning” experience.
Seems this combination is from a MG 1100/1300 and not a mini.
It contains “A” type gears since it has the brass bushings.

While taking the gearbox apart lots of small “things” started flying around the garage floor. After checking all the vendor diagrams I believe I have identified most of the parts. Here is what I found :

#1. locking peg (1), locking spring (1). [2nd and 3rd gear]
#2. plunger (1)
#3. synchro balls (6), synchro springs (6). [1st/2nd synchro, 3rd/4th synchro]
#4. ????

Q: any idea what #4 is?

Q: the locking peg & spring fit into the mainshaft (picture below). Correct?

Q: in the picture below is this the proper place for the plunger?

Q: am I missing anything?

Well I was able to confirm the location for items #1, #2 and #3.
Still seeking help with #4 (picture below)

Here is info for #3 from the Workshop manual.

Here is another picture of #4.
Any assistance identifying #4 would be appreciated.

#4 looks like a roller bearing that has escaped from the bearing cage, probably from the laygear or end of first motion shaft. Could also have come from the idler bearing.

That was pretty damn clever Jason! Just goes to show how important it is to keep the magnet type gearbox oil drain plug.

I used to convert brass taper plugs to magnet spec for MGB GT V8's back axles. On enthusiastically driven MGB GT V8's, the axles would shed slivers of case hardening from the planets and sun wheels causing carnage..... Anyway the magnetic drain plugs worked a treat

Thanks guys!
Another source also suggested the Laygear.

Somehow one single roller did escape!

On this Laygear there is no “cage” … just a metal cap holding the nipples along with a c-clip.
It was not fun placing the individual rollers along the sides without them falling out!

Since this gearbox is just for “learning” I may not need to replace the roller bearing.
