Forum - Transition to a new server and stewardship
Hello all, I hope you’re all having a good weekend, and anyone who’s been to Goodwood this weekend has remain safe and dry.
Thanks for your patience while Mark and I work through the various technical issues, obstacles and hurdles that this transition has thrown up.
I’ll be stepping into Mark’s shoes shortly and wanted to give a bit of info about how the process will go.
The files that support the forum have grown to a considerable and significant size over the years and because of this, the actual movement of these files will probably take me the best part of a day on and off to migrate them, and so inevitably there will be some forum downtime.
I have successfully done a dry run and a couple members have also been kind enough to test logging in and a few features, so I’m reasonably confident of a successful outcome.
As it stands, the plan is this;
Tonight I’ll lock the forum down - this is to try to ensure that we are able to move all the images and posts across so as not to lose anything along the way.
I’ll conduct some final test to ensure the forum looks the same on the new server as it does on the current one and fix any problems that arise
If that’s successful then during the course of tomorrow, the background addressing will be moved to repoint the Mk1-forum.net.
As soon as that process is completed I’ll unlock the forum and with a little bit of luck, the Mk1 Forum will reopen for the same friendly discussion about all things related to the ADO15 its variants and love-children.
In the unlikely event that it’s unsuccessful, I’ll unlock the forum temporarily on the current server and update you all here.
I remain grateful to Mark for founding this brilliant corner of the internet in the first place, his cooperation and support on this change over and I sincerely hope that this community remains the invaluable resource it has been up until now and continues to thrive, sharing the knowledge and the passion for these wonderful vehicles for people new to the addiction.
Once we’re through this step, I’m not planning any major changes, the same rules will apply here, although I will be keen to hear from members if they have suggestions for how to improve the experience here.
See you on the other side
Gary

Re: Forum - Transition to a new server and stewardship
Many thanks to both Mark for providing, and yourself for continuing to provide, this excellent resource and community!
I’ve learnt a lot from here, be it technical or just interesting. I’ve also made a few friends along the way and also experienced some ‘characters’ which goes some way to prove how diverse we are, even if not entirely PC at times!
I hope all goes well with the transition (although that sounds more like someone have a ‘gender re-alignment’ than shifting files between servers ).

I'm very happy to see someone has come forward to take over the stewardship from Mark who has done such a stellar job all these years. Many thanks again to Mark and I'm looking forward to a bright future of this great board. Thanks for taking it on Gary!
Of course I know what a dipstick is, you get called something often enough you look it up!

Re: Forum - Transition to a new server and stewardship
Fantastic news, I've been on the forum in one form or another since the early days.
Obviously thanks to Mark & the team for doing an excellent job and thanks to Gary for stepping up.
I agree, keep the forum simple and level headed as Mark has.
I’ve met a lot of people over the years on the forum with some excellent cars and projects, I’d like to echo Marks words about people wording up and adding some pictures of there vehicles and keeping the forum alive.
Dave.

Re: Forum - Transition to a new server and stewardship
Thanks so much to Mark and Gary for keeping this wonderful forum alive, and all the moderators and regular posters too.
This is just the best news, and better still that it will remain in the spirit of the old forum!
Here’s to many more years of amazing content, can’t wait to see what’s around the corner…
Cheers, Thomas

Re: Forum - Transition to a new server and stewardship
Great news and many thanks Mark and Gary, look forward to seeing everyone again on the other side of a hopefully smooth transition!
Now I'm recently retired I was starting to worry what I was going to do with all that extra time on my hands if the Mk1 Forum was no longer there to browse the latest Mini topics and members projects! ....or to be there to ask for advice or to search for an answer to a technical query....or on occasion share something interesting from my own archive or something relevant that I have seen elsewhere.

Re: Forum - Transition to a new server and stewardship
Fantastic news, and many thanks, Gary, for taking it on and keeping it going.
I don't know if Mark mentioned, but I am happy to remain as a moderator if that suits - I fully understand if you want to have a shake up - I'll be honest, it's fairly simple (I am a bit of a luddite), but more importantly, there is little to do on a day to day basis - just occasionally politely quoting from the riot act and reminding some folks to keep the heid and remember we are all here for fun..... Thankfully though these are VERY rare occassions indeed, and hope they remain so under the new stewardship
Cheers,
Al
