Having fitted a combined water / oil / fuel gauge from a Morris Oxford / Austin Cambridge to the van, it has consistently read hotter than normal on the instrument, but a temp reading at the header tank with a digital thermometer shows nothing untoward.

So, does anyone know if perhaps B series Temp senders are calibrated differently?

I see a few folk sell them with different colours at the base of the spade, but is it purely that - a different colour of plastic - or is there a way to tell one from another?

Failing that, I'll wire in a rheostat so I can set it

There’s different senders to match different thermostat opening temps, plus of course the stabilised & unstabilised sender/gauges

Been planning to work on a temp gauge for my van too. This thread looked useful, especially the resistance/temp values of senders, so I bookmarked it. Might help you?

I guess the gauge would also read high if it's not being supplied via a voltage stabiliser? Which I believe have 11V output, on the Mini.

A few years back, I went through loads of senders for a lot of different cars looking for one that was right and well, I couldn't find the right one with a 5/8" UNF Thread to suit the Mini head. All those I tested would make the gauge read hotter than was in fact the case.

I'm now running a genuine Smiths universal sender TT6811-01. These are 1/8" NPT. I made my own adaptor to fit the head, but I'm sure if you looked around, someone would sell them. The gauge now reads correctly.

I did try a fixed resistor in desperation at one point, but if you look at the tables in the link that MagicWandWoody (almost sounds R rated !) you'll see that you can only set it right at one point in the range and it'll be way off elsewhere.
