Hiya all, is it viable to use any type of gasket sealer on new head gasket? Does anyone use a particular type with success?

I'm loathed to as most have a sealant on them that's heat activated. Putting anything else on them can interfere with that.
Having said that, when I have made annealed solid copper head gaskets, I use spray on Hylomar on them.

I'll second Spider - depends on the headgasket but if I do it is spray Hylomar.

Can you use spray Hylomar on today’s copper gaskets? And do you coat both sides?

I would never spray anything on a copper head gasket. Leave it in half an inch of water for 3 hours and then fit.

What is the reason behind this custom?

Its supposed to swell up the material in betweeen the copper sheets. It seals better
