Auction fakes...

Post by cockney21 »

Saw this up for sale on Ebay and Classic Car Auctions site...

https://www.classiccarauctions.co.uk/19 ... 498&pp=100

Gave them a call to see if there was an explanation as to why they are selling what is plainly not a 1963 car. Thy said they are going by what the vendor told them...so they are a business selling classic cars and they can't see that this is not what they are willing to advertise it as!

I did ask them if they would be happy to sell a cloned 3 year old car for someone, they replied that they would not...but a 40 year old car is fine. Could have been nicked off somebody's drive for all they know, interesting to see if they continue with it to auction.

The auction houses are all just sewer pipes, they aren't responsible for the sewerage they spew out. As with most things, it's simply a case of buyer beware.

A quick email to the DVLA or crime stoppers Is always worth the effort in these situations.

Oh sod off you arse.

I've always said that the biggest crooks in the motor trade are those selling classic cars, or 'motor cars' as these pretentious barrow boys like to say.

That's really bad.

I'm slightly bemused that the auction company is allowed or prepared to pass this off as a Mk1. Is their lack of knowledge of what they're presenting for sale really that bad? Or is it shear incompetence? I see they have some sort of disclaimer absolving them from liability with some words about they only present the information supplied by the vendor, but come on surely they need to do some due diligence otherwise surely it's mis-selling!

Either way, there's nothing remotely Mk1 about that car other than the spurious addition of a number plate and identity from another vehicle.

If you read the description you can clearly see what it is [and isn't]...doesn't seem to me like they're trying to hide it. But I suppose one does have to read between the lines to figure that out.

I have reported this to the DVLA. Its fraud and car should be withdrawn from the auction.
A guide price of £5-7K more like in the hundreds, not thousands.
Also being advertised as a 1963 car it qualifies as a historic car and thus no need to be charged road tax...fraud again

Looks like there all at it still.

I feel sorry for the new owner and/or the person that had their car stolen and cloned.

You would think the auction house would be considered just as guilty of a crime as the seller, it's not as if they could argue they were decieved by a master mind faking these cars :?

To be fair, it's been a while since you could get any kind of road ready Mini under £2000. They would easily get 3k for it if it was all legit. Which it isn't
But you would have to be a complete mini novice not to realise what this represents. It's bloody annoying that this has been going on for so long with impunity. Simply changing a few plates and, hey presto, you save yourself a few hundred quid a year.
But selling it on as something it is not compounds the felony. I just hope that whoever buys this sort of thing realises that they are immediately complicit in the fraudulent use of tax exempt status. Still, the current owner has probably been getting away with it for years so why worry?

I worry because it might be my car that gets stolen one day and sold on using a log book that belonged to a car that was scrapped years ago (and bought at auction described as a restoration project that will never be). Perhaps it might change if one of them gets found guilty of peddling iffy cars, I don't think it would do too much for their TV program if it was highlighted. The loss of tax is not something that bothers me but it does give leverage to those who question the historic vehicle status.

What I meant was, the people that run these ringers don't need to worry, they're not going to get caught out any time soon. One Mini is much like any other to the non-cogniscenti. They're all the bleedin' same them Minis aren't they?

In my day locally they were known East London or Essex car dealers - aka Del Boy. :D  Perhaps local sawdust distributors as well. :D Sounds OK to me GOV!

There is a more full description on C&C, including the following :

Little is known about this Mini's early life although, in 2000, it was sent to Mini Magic in York for a full rebuild including shell (quote in file)
Their quote (25/ 09/ 2000) discussed the use of a reconditioned 'shell and doors and boot' and 'the engine out of a 1990 car which has covered 41, 000 miles', assumed to be a 998cc unit from the Mini 1000 (99H)

In other words they swapped the plates onto the shell pretty much. Pretty murky waters but not the first nor will it be the last.
