Hello everyone,

I'm new in the Mini world and I'm trying to bring back to life a little one, an Austin from 1965. As I'm trying to leave it as close to original as possible, I'm having a hard time identifying the proper panels. I'm wondering if someone is nice enough to help me, especially with two:

Front panel - how to identify the MK1 from the rest?
Wings - same question, I think I read something regarding the holes, but can be mistaken.

Hope you can help me, there's plenty to learn

I suggest that you read down about 15 or so lines of the index and you'll read an almost identical querie. Most of your answers will be there - or pretty close too.

But, in short, of the panels you mention, the modern replacements can be easily retro-converted by a competent tinnie to suit your '65 car

For 1965 the numberplate brackets would be the narrower ones.
M-machine can supply you with a modified later front panel that is correct. The bonnet slam panel and the indicator lamp mounts are different on a mk1.

The panel in your top picture is for a later injection car.

It has a cutout on the front left for alternator/aircon compressor and later upright support in centre.

Panel in lower picture may possibly fit, although it does not have totally original MK1 features if that's your goal.

After market panels like this are identical for early and late cars with the exception of the rear mounting brackets where panel is secured to front subframe. Early type brackets are deeper and panel bolts directly to subframe. Later version uses a mount between panel and subframe so mounting brackets are shallower. I see it's marked at £100. Minispares do same panel for $82-$89 depending on type MS4L or MS4E.

As already mentioned M-machine do a detail perfect panel which is an MS4E that they have modified.

Also the opening in the RH side of the grille panel inset recess is for the Mk3 onwards plastic air intake for the passenger side eyeball dash cold air vent when fitted (RH drive Minis). On Mk3 Minis without the eyeball air vents a blanking panel is fitted over the opening. Original Mk1/2 front panels did not have eyeball vents even as an option so don't have the extra grille opening.

You will also find the area that the indicators mount are larger to accommodate the later indicators. The plastic lens that screwed to the front panel.

I think almost all or all front panels are like this now. Some restorers reduce the size of them. Paul Wiginton does this, look on instagram or YouTube.
