Which are considered best air filters for twin hs4's as i have to buy some? I have some pipercross socks which i was thinking of using and if i did which trumpets would i need to fit them? regards Steve

socks are a waste of time

id say either k&n's, one of the expensive 'mbe' type kits or the super cheap chrome jobbers. with k&ns or the chrome ones you need to fit the little 'stub-stacks' into them as well.

if your running trumpets, leave them open - all the socks do is jam against the open end and restrict them

When I read vizards bible. He said if you treasure your engine your run some kind of filter and not open trumpets.

As he tested the amount of road dirt, grime that could get in your engine when not using a filter.

I have only read this and not tested it myself , so it could not be as bad as it sounds

Maybe the cheap stainless/chrome pancakes then. Which stubstacks to fit inside these? where from? Thanks Steve

I got this ones last week.
I think they look fantastic.

Proper socks have an internal spiral of wire to stop them collapsing.... and you tie them around the top of the trumpets so that air can flow through the sides of the sock as well as the top....

But if I was doing it again I think I would be looking at the kits from itp - or is it itg????

Almondgreen, is that a Maniflow intake? I've got one sat on my shelf.

I've also got the K&N filters with the pretty little K&N stub stacks, worth noting though they don't fit in the offset conical type filters.

Yes Maniflow, but there is something special with the carbs, who sees it ?

Could it be the jets set up. ie; non waxstat jets.?

dean, baja racing in the calafornia deserts maybe, but in the damp uk its not so much of a problem!

my road car 1071 has run open trumpets for nearly (gulp) 10 years, that engine has never been in bits, and i often would check the insides of the trumpets with a cloth to see how bad they where - they where never any worse than the elbow part attached to a std air filter.

my white car runs in 'all weathers' with open trumpets and the deposits are worse, but its more oily filth (it does breath quite a bit!) rather than chunks of grit.

im afraid that fitting those horrid socks comes firmly into the 'what if' section of mini ownership for me

True, true. He does test over in the USA. So much different to here. Did not think of that.

And like I said I have never tested it. But you running your car for 10 years is proof that it's fine. I have a set in the shed that I was not sure on using, But I may give it ago once it's up and running.

Air filter and ram pipes (with or without) socks has been mentioned a few times here and on the "998 Cooper engine" thread viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3836

On a rolling road test with 1293cc App. K Mini's a few month ago, we found that 2-3 Bhp is lost when using Piper filter socks on ram pipes. The result was the same on two different cars.

(btw my rally Mini lost 10-15 Bhp when temp went up from 70 - 90 degree. Hot summer day on rolling road was difficult to cool engine)
