Its me again with a LHD '79. Sometimes, if you let the clutch in with a bang or fly over a speed bump, there is a loud crack in the region of the (big) front subframe bolt. I have recently replaced all the doughnuts and fitted Hi-Los. The big bolt is torqued up to 55 Ft Lbs.
I do not know previous history of the car, but if upper and lower subframe mounting rubbers are perished (Minispares KGE100050/60) would this account for the disturbing noise. If so, how easy would it be to replace the rubbers, especially the one between the top of the subframe and the body.

Re: subframe mounts front
In my experience, with later rubber mounted subframes, is to fit solid mounts to the front panel and subframe towers but leave the rubber mounts on the rear floor mounts (don’t use the poly ones, they’re rubbish) this makes the whole front end feel better. The top ones are easy to do, remove the tower bolts and front mounts then jack up the body just enough to slide the mount in then lower the body down replace the bolts and the do the front mounts. Huge improvement and doesn’t make any difference to cabin noise. And while you’re at it just check the engine stabiliser bushes.
