cutaway A-series engine and gearbox

Post by AndyB72 »

With garage space limited and cars now on a 'one in, one out' basis I picked this up over summer to have a play with over winter. From what I understand from the guy I bought it from it was used in a College. The plan is to strip it down and give it a good clean, maybe lightly media blast some of the non painted parts and possibly add a cutaway starter, dynamo and oil filter housing. If I can get a good match for the green I'll touchup the damaged areas but plan on leaving the red/yellow/white areas original.

REALLY nice to see. We did things like this as engineering apprentices at Carlisle in the early 60's. A lot of the cutting away was done by hand and hacksaws while other stuff was done during the machine shop phases . This sort of thing was done to aid instruction but more so, to work to instructions. You could easilky be caught out with a bit of machine cutting going throufg into something else or cutting a gallery away to expose a spring........ only to find that the spring - or rod - couldn't be contained properly.

I still have some bits. Some of the apprentices sectioned or skeletonised engines and axles were on display in the local car showrooms as work of the local apprentices

Made my day to see it

The BMC cutaway engines slowly turning over on the display stands at the Earls Court Motor Show in the 1960's always used to fascinate me when visiting the show as a youngster with my older brother.

The BMC ones look amazing and were built using new parts, mostly chromed, where as the one I have is from a college and was based on a used engine.

My plan is to not go too nuts cleaning it up, I need to try and resist the temptation to media blast everything, zinc plate selected parts and repaint everything... or do I?

Andy i think the mini one belongs to Minispares and the 1800 one belongs to Rich or vice-versa , i was always told that the ones that BMC did for dealers showrooms were based on blocks that were unsuitable for anything but scrap but has you say new, a BMC one sold on fleabay a few years ago for £300 , i was interested but it was in S, Wales , nice talking point Andy. ;) ;)
